Dobbs Ferry Historical Society: Preserving the rich history of a small village
Dobbs Ferry is a small village in Westchester County that is known for its picturesque architecture and scenic waterfront views. However, the village has a rich history that dates back to the pre-Revolutionary War era. To preserve and share the fascinating history of Dobbs Ferry, the Dobbs Ferry Historical Society was established in 1941.
The Dobbs Ferry Historical Society resides in The Mead House; built in 1855 by Abram Willsea, by 1920 it was owned by the Herbert Mead family. In 1991, Clara Mead left the home to the Society. Ms. Mead, a 1926 graduate of Wellesley College, had a lively interest in local history.
The Dobbs Ferry Historical Society serves this village by:
Collecting and preserving public and private documents as well as formal and informal correspondence which have been used by past generations and which typify and illustrate their way of life.
Making available historical publications, books, paintings, artifacts, and maps relating to the history of Dobbs Ferry.
Filming and recording oral histories of present citizens to preserve their stories for future generations.
Publishing books, pamphlets, and the newsletter, The Ferryman.
Fostering an awareness and appreciation for the history of Dobbs Ferry and all the people, noted and humble, who transmitted the good things of the past to the present and the future
